I’ve always been against veering too far from your personal style during Fashion Week. Yes, you want to go bold, stand out, and look amazing — but at their core, your outfits should still make you feel like you. Otherwise, you veer into phony costume territory, which…isn’t very chic.
Still, I definitely turn the louder elements of my style up to 100 when it comes to getting noticed as I approach the crowd of street style photographers. I’m not ashamed to say I feel significantly cooler when I get a good Getty! And I’ve found that the secret to getting photographed isn’t wearing the flashiest designer, or even the very best outfit.
It’s paying attention to the trends, and dressing accordingly.
So many of the photographers stalking the shows are on assignment, and many are hunting specific trends to be included in roundups written by my peers at all your favorite publications. If you want to be included in stories like these, prioritizing the pieces, prints and colors they’ll be citing is a great way to get noticed.
Luckily, this season’s options truly run the gamut. The romantics will flock to Chloé-core, lovers of a retro flair will lean heavily into polka dots, and those with edgier style will embrace the emphasis on bulky, boxy outerwear thrown over even the daintiest of dresses.
And of course, we’re all going anti-heel this season. Why? Because we can!
Below, check out the top five trends I predict you’ll see the most of, plus some pieces to help you get the look. If you like ‘em, wear em! I’m pretty sure I’m wearing all of these at one point or another, and I’ve even linked a few of the pieces I’m wearing as Easter eggs — but trust, a full What I Wore To NYFW recap will be sure to follow!
With that, I’m off to panic-plan my outfits, finalize my schedule and figure out ways to skip all the parties I RSVP’d to when I had more energy. Happy Fashion Month!
Chloé-core: Ruffles, Romance & Sheers
Chemena Kamali’s debut collection for Chloé (FW24) made a case for the brand’s inevitable cool-girl comeback — if anyone can Make Boho Great Again, it’s Kamali. And she has! Think flowy, sheer frocks with ruffles galore in shades of dusty rose, burgundy, mustard and nude, all paired back to boots, leather capelets and the now-iconic gold Chloé logo belt.
While many bookmarked the collection for inspo, I fear few splurged on the actual dresses, some of which retail for over $6,000. Rather than go into debt over a silk mousseline ruffle, try any of the options above.
Done With Leopard? Do The Polka
Yes, leopard print will reign supreme this season — but I trust you already know this, so allow me to flag one other print to dote on. Dots! Polka dots have crept up all over the runways (we talked about them here in early June, if you recall). Even though the look once gave me major Minnie Mouse vibes, I’ve come to find it more cool than kitsch. When styled properly, that is.
Rules for polka success? The bigger and cleaner the dot, the cooler — and most are gravitating towards black dots on white or cream, instead of vice versa. But whatever size or colorway thrills you most, I say dot on!
On Top: Barn Jackets + Cropped Trenches
As a lover of long coats, this season’s shorter silhouettes are a bit of a challenge in the best way. An emphasis on bulky barn jackets and oversized suede or worn-in leather bombers is all about contrast. The heavier the look, the better it contrasts a feminine frock or a silky set. I’ve personally snagged the center style above by Lastwolf via Wolf and Badger, but I’d also recommend going vintage here, if you’re up for the hunt.
This season also marks the chop of the trench coat. So many retailers are showing cropped versions of the timeless silhouette for a fresh feel, without the cosplaying-as-Inspector-Gadget undertones. I like!
MVD (Most Valuable Detail): The Attached Scarf
I still remember the oohs and ahhs emitted when the Retrofête model in the pink knit above strutted around The Plaza’s ballroom with her pink scarf trailing behind her. We love a bit of wearable drama!
Since then, I’ve noticed the attached scarf detail popping up on even more ready-to-wear pieces, with brands like COS really leaning into the cozy, effortless look. What started as an outerwear-only trend — thank you, Toteme — has expanded to tops, dresses and more. (And dare I say it reeks of pashmina-core?)
Footloose: Embracing the Anti-Heel
I’ll definitely still be stomping around in my kitten-heeled slingbacks (Shout out to my Fulton insoles for keeping me going), but the majority of shoe options this season are decidedly flat. And fierce!
Think elevated ballet flats in exciting textures and colors (I’m so excited about the woven Bared Footwear pair, top left), vibrant sneakers, corpcore loafers, and even Birkenstock-esque clogs, a la this Tory Burch pair I bought a few months back.
