Happy New Year, B Listers!
Welcome back from our Holiday Hiatus. Our usual fashion musings will return this Thursday, but before that, allow me to wax poetic on a resolution of sorts…
A few weeks ago, I found myself enjoying some well-deserved downtime at Othership [If you don’t recall, I first wrote about the sauna/ice bath guided meditation classes back in June, and have been a devout attendee since].
The class that day was called Embodiment, and focused primarily on curated stretching, aromatherapy, and gentle breathwork. At the end of these session, the instructors always invite attendees to share — and I am frequently wowed at the vulnerability of those who do.
Folks open up about hardships big and small, from stressful work days to breakups to significant losses. It’s surprising, intimate, and powerful every single time (and a little cultish, but sue me, I’m into it).
During this particular class, one woman shared that she had been thinking a lot about her triggers lately, and wanted to find a term for the opposite of a trigger. Instead of focusing on things that sparked red flags or anxiety, she wanted to hone in on and embrace the moments, people, and actions that sparked joy, calm and happiness in her life. After some research, she learned these positive sensations are called “glimmers.”
The whole class loved it, naturally. And so did I. My fiancé Pat swears I’m an optimist, but the truth is that I often struggle to see the good in stressful situations. Making an intentional effort to focus on glimmers instead of triggers seems like a brave and empowering choice, and it’s an endeavor I intend to prioritize in the new year.
As I said goodbye to 2024, I was pleased to reflect on all the glimmers that made it such a special year. Getting engaged was inarguably the best moment for me, but it might surprise you all to learn that you top my list of glimmers as well. Launching B List and having an editorial space of my own here on the internet, away from my other bylines and content-heavy social platforms, has been a true blessing. I can’t wait for B List’s first birthday, and all to come after.
Last year, I saw my face on a billboard in Times Square. I had a full photoshoot and feature written about me for InStyle. I partnered with brands I absolutely adore, from Batiste and Warby Parker to Nordstrom, Bilt and Strathberry. I negotiated my own contracts and doubled my salary. I launched two amazing hair accessory collections with RPZL. I hosted events, went on press trips, and attended amazing runway shows. I traveled to Palm Beach, Miami, Seattle, Jamaica and Colorado. I developed a healthier lifestyle, fell in love with working out and lost 55 pounds. I turned 29 over a pastrami sandwich at Katz’s Deli. I said yes to Forever with the love of my life and celebrated with our families. I wrote and I filmed and I edited and I posted, and I loved (almost) every second of it.
I’ll spare you a list of my more concrete resolutions and goals for the year, but making a point to celebrate the glimmers will most definitely be a top priority.
2025 stands to be one of the very best years of my life. In March, I’ll turn 30 and begin a new decade of discovery. In October, Pat and I will get married. In between? Glimmers galore.
